All Star Sprint Race Results - Volusia Speedway Park (FL) - Thu.
2/4/99 - By Scott Hall
BARBERVILLE, FL - Greg Hodnett led wire-to-wire in the All Star
sprint 20-lap feature Thursday night at Volusia Speedway Park. It
was the opening event for the All Stars’ 20th anniversary season,
worth $3,000 to the Tennessee speedster now in his second season
racing for the Apple Motorsports Chevrolet/Maxim team out of
Pennsylvania. Hodnett got the jump on pole man Terry McCarl and
survived a Lance Dewease lap 14 challenge to win the first 410
sprint car main of 1999. From victory lane, Hodnett thanked his
owner Bob Stewart, sponsors and the All Stars for putting on the
Florida Speedweeks series. The top five finishers in the A Main all
rode aboard Hoosier tires. McCarl started on the ButlerBuilt
Motorsports Equipment Hot Seat pole position with Hodnett alongside.
Frankie Kerr and Lance Dewease gridded row two, with Danny Lasoski
and Joey Saldana next. Dewease grabbed second on lap two, dropping
McCarl to third. Tim Shaffer, Brian Ellenberger and Dean Jacobs were
involved in a turn four crash on lap three to bring out a red. There
were no injuries, but Shaffer's J&M Motorsports Cook car was
destroyed, and Jacobs flipped. Hodnett was still on top over Dewease,
McCarl and Kerr, stretching his advantage until he hit lapped
traffic on lap nine. The halfway mark saw the order Hodnett, Dewease,
McCarl, Kerr, Gary Wright, Lasoski, Jeff Shepard and Kelly Kinser.
With heavy traffic ahead, Dewease was right on Hodnett’s back
bumper, but he could not move the Walt Dyer Eagle past the leader.
Freddie Rahmer stopped on the track on lap 18, bringing out the
final caution. Rahmer was able to restart on the tail as Hodnett
pulled away to win over Dewease and Kerr, who got past McCarl on lap
19 for third. McCarl was next, followed by Lasoski and Wright.
Wright charged from 11th to fifth before losing the spot to Lasoski
on the last lap. Shepard finished seventh, earning the "Team
Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award. Kinser, Billy Pauch and
Saldana completed the top ten.
The United Expressline heat fell to Pauch, the Southwest
Expressline heat to Kevin Gobrecht, the Southwest Glass heat was won
by P.J. Chesson and the United Specialties heat went to Wright. Paul
McMahan was the United Expressline B Main winner and Bob Felmlee won
the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main. Saldana was the Red
Devil Brakes fast qualifier.
