All Star Sprint Race Results - Volusia Speedway Park (FL) - Fri.
2/5/99 - By Scott Hall
BARBERVILLE, FL - Kevin Gobrecht recorded his second career All
Star sprint triumph in the 20-lap sprint car feature Friday night at
Volusia Speedway Park. As on the night before, the outside front row
was the place to start as the Pennsylvania driver led wire-to-wire
over Greg Hodnett.
"On lap one I said to myself 'go for it,' and I just hung on
and hoped it would work. This is my first time in Florida,"
Gobrecht recalled of his initial lap move into the lead. He then
thanked his sponsor Zemco Headers, Hoosier Tires, Maxim Chassis and
Davey Brown Chevrolet Engines. He garnered $3,000 for the hard
earned victory.
Hodnett started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot Seat
pole position underneath Gobrecht, followed on the grid by Lance
Dewease and Jeff Shepard as the top three starters had to make the
feature by transferring from the B Main. Gobrecht jumped into the
lead in the first turn, leading the rest of the way. Meanwhile,
Shepard snared second behind the leader, with Hodnett following in
third and Dewease fourth as the battle for second, third and fourth
was the best of the evening.
Seventh starting Gary Wright moved to fifth around PJ Chesson on
lap five, but lost that spot to Danny Lasoski on lap eight with
Gobrecht still on top over Shepard, Hodnett and Dewease. Dewease
pushed his way past Hodnett for third on lap nine, but lapped heavy
traffic shuffled him back two spots the next circuit. Lasoski was
really putting the pressure on, and was right on Hodnett for third
on lap 14, as Hodnett moved in on Shepard for a great three car
battle for second and third. On lap 15, Hodnett took the runner-up
spot from Shepard with Lasoski on Shepard's bumper. Shepard held off
Lasoski for third as the final rundown was Gobrecht, Hodnett,
Shepard, Lasoski, Wright and Dewease.
Billy Pauch finished seventh, earning the "Team Simpson
Racing Lucky Seven" award, ahead of Joe Gaerte, who started
eighth, 11th starting Frankie Kerr and 16th starter Todd Shaffer.
The United Expressline heat fell to Terry McCarl, the Southwest
Expressline heat to Todd Shaffer, the Southwest Glass heat was won
by Kenny Jacobs and the United Specialties heat went to Joe Roe.
Greg Hodnett won the United Expressline B Main and Larry Pinegar won
the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main. P J Chesson was the
Red Devil Brakes fast qualifier. Thursday night winner Hodnett spun
out and tapped the wall in his heat race, forcing him to the C and B
Mains.
