All Star Sprint Race Results - Volusia Speedway Park (FL) - Sat.
2/6/99 - By Scott Hall
BARBERVILLE, FL - It was the good, the bad and the ugly for the
Zemco racing team in the All Star sprint 20-lap feature Saturday
night at Volusia Speedway Park. The good was Billy Pauch making a
last lap pass of Greg Hodnett to win the A Main. The Bad was Kevin
Gobrecht flipping out of the ballpark, destroying his machine in a
heat race. And the Ugly was Gobrecht's car then catching on fire. He
went to the hospital for a checkup, but returned to the speedway
uninjured.
"The last lap is what counts," an excited Pauch
exclaimed in victory lane. "The best spot was on the
bottom," was his explanation of this last turn move on race
long leader Hodnett. Pauch's winning mount was the John Zemaitis
owned, Chevrolet-powered Maxim.
Gary Wright started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot
Seat pole position with Hodnett outside. Frankie Kerr and Lance
Dewease comprised the second row, with the top two qualifiers,
wrenched by temporary crew chief Sammy Swindell, PJ Chesson and
Jamie Chesson in row three.
Dean Jacobs spun on the initial display of the green, moving him
to the rear for another try at a start. When the green flew again,
Hodnett pushed the Apple Motorsports Maxim into the lead, followed
by Wright, Dewease and eighth starting Pauch. Hodnett moved into
lapped traffic by lap five, and squeezed past the backmarkers with
enough skill to retain his advantage over Wright and Dewease. Lap
nine saw Pauch get past Dewease for third and set his sights on
Wright as Hodnett remained on top. A pair of circuits later, Pauch
moved past Wright and the chase was on of the leader. Tim Shaffer
slowed the action on lap 13 with a spin with the running order still
Hodnett, Pauch, Wright, Dale Blaney, up from 20th starting spot in
his brother's J &J, Jamie Chesson and Kerr.
With five to go, Hodnett still led, with Pauch right on his tail,
with Blaney moving to third, Chesson fourth and Wright shuffled back
to fifth. Pauch kept the pressure on, waiting for an opening to get
by. That split second came on the final turn, as he pushed his
machine under Hodnett in turn four to take the win at the finish
line, wowing the huge crowd and stunning Hodnett. Blaney ended
third, stating, "The track was excellent for this car. The
track came to me." Blaney struggled all week, and finally hit
the right set-up for his Goodyear Tire-shod mount. Jamie Chesson
garnered fourth with Wright fifth and Dewease sixth.
Joe Gaerte finished seventh, earning the "Team Simpson
Racing Lucky Seven" award after starting tenth, followed by
Joey Saldana, Kerr and PJ Chesson.
The United Expressline heat fell to Terry McCarl, the Southwest
Expressline heat to Kelly Kinser, the Southwest Glass heat was won
by Joey Saldana and the United Specialties heat went to Dean Jacobs.
J. Chesson won the United Expressline B Main while Nebraskan Bill
Robertson won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main and J.
Chesson was the Red Devil Brakes fast qualifier. Butch Schroeder
flipped in the B Main, ending his night and later in the B, Paul
McMahan spun, taking out Brian Ellenberger and Leonard Lee. Jeff
Shepard stopped for the incident and restarted on the tail, moving
back to fifth as the end and missing an A Main transfer by one spot.
