All Star Sprint Race Results - East Bay Raceway, Tampa, FL - Thu.
2/11/99 - By Scott Hall
GIBSONTON, FL - Billy Pauch powered around Frankie Kerr on lap 14
to win the All Star sprint 25-lap feature Thursday night at East Bay
Raceway in round two of the 23rd annual East Bay Nationals. Pauch
started third in the John Zemaitis silver anniversary Maxim with
Chevrolet power under the hood and rode Hoosier tires to victory
lane for his second Florida win of the season.
"I have to give this one to my crew. We struggled, changed
every shock and bar and tried every combination. Whatever there was
to change we changed and we got pretty darn close to perfect
tonight," Pauch recalled.
With Mike Frost starting on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment
Hot Seat pole position, Frankie Kerr was outside the front row,
followed by Pauch and Lance Dewease. Kerr jumped into the lead, with
IRA regular Frost hanging close and making an unsuccessful inside
dive for the lead on lap four. Meanwhile, Dewease was third with
Pauch fourth and Jeff Shepard fifth. In traffic on lap seven,
Shepard passed Pauch, then Dewease to take third and move in on
Frost.
The turning point of the race came on lap ten when Shepard dove
under Frost in turn three and ran out or real estate, spinning as
Frost held his ground. This brought out the only caution of the
race.
The restart order was Kerr, Frost, Pauch, Dewease and Lasoski,
who started sixth. Pauch rode high on the frontstretch to take
second from Frost a lap later, and began applying heavy pressure on
Kerr. On lap 13, Pauch made a high move for the lead, but Kerr
fought him off. The next lap Pauch powered high around Kerr coming
off turn four to take command to lead lap 15.
Pauch described his pass for the lead, "Frank was running
just a little bit in the middle of the track and there was just
enough to get around him. I just wanted to get alongside him so he
could see me coming off. I darn near got pinched coming off of two.
We got pretty close coming off four. I was just hoping he wouldn't
stay with me."
Once on top, Pauch continued to pull away, just out of striking
distance of Kerr. Meanwhile, the race heated up for second, third
and fourth, with Gary Wright, who started 13th, moving to third with
five circuits remaining. Lasoski was right on Wright's back bumper,
and slid under Wright for third on lap 23, So at the finish it was
Pauch by a half a straightaway, followed by Kerr, Lasoski, Wright
and eighth starter Terry McCarl.
"We were pretty good, we just weren't good enough,"
runner-up Kerr related, We were loose in one and two and pretty good
everywhere else. He (Pauch) was just a little bit better than
us."
Dewease was sixth, while Greg Hodnett finished seventh, earning
the "Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award. Kelly Kinser,
Bob Felmlee and Jac Haudenschild were next.
The United Expressline heat fell to Joe Gaerte, the Southwest
Expressline heat to Jeff Shepard, the Southwest Glass heat was won
by Gary Wright, the United Specialties heat went to Kevin Gobrecht
and the fifth heat to Jac Haudenschild. Frankie Kerr won the
$1,000Jean Lynch Appreciation Dash for the second time this week.
Mike Frost chilled the competition by winning the United Expressline
B Main. Brian Schnee won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C
Main and Danny Lasoski, with a new track record of 12.656 seconds,
was the Red Devil Brakes fast qualifier.
