All Star Sprint Race Results - Eldora Speedway, Rossburg, OH - Sat.
4/24/99 - By Scott Hall
ROSSBURG, OH - Series' points leader Jac Haudenschild made it
two-for-two with the All Star sprints at Eldora Speedway on a cold
Saturday night, winning his second 30 lap feature here in two
attempts. He held off a fast closing Jim Nier at the end after
passing early leader Kasey Kahne on lap nine for the lead.
"I love this track," the driver of Jack Elden's
Chevrolet powered Maxim said. "I could run anyplace I wanted to
tonight, it was definitely my kind of track."
"I knew that somebody was coming close to me on lap 27, but
I didn't know who it was," Haudenschild recalled of Nier's late
charge. He concluded, "I want to compliment the kid (Kasey
Kahne) for the strong run he had at the start and for the run he
gave me. He's gonna be tough."
Nier started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot Seat
pole position with Washington's Kahne alongside. Brian Paulus
gridded third with Haudenschild fourth. When the green appeared, a
mix-up in the back of the pack saw five cars involved, with Jason
Dukes, Mark Long and Nick Naber flipping. Kyle Sauder and Marty Ling
were also involved, and all five were eliminated.
Once the mess was cleaned up, Kahne grabbed the lead followed by
Paulus and Haudenschild. Haudenschild disposed of Paulus on lap two,
and kept within striking distance of Kahne.
Kahne maintained a six car length lead at lap five, which shrunk
when he entered lapped traffic on lap six. Haudenschild closed in
through laps six and seven, grabbing the lead by putting a slide job
on Kahne in turn two on lap nine.
The order was now Haudenschild, Kahne, Paulus, Nier, Kenny
Jacobs, in his debut in the Kenny Jacobs Motorsports No. 6, Byron
Reed and Dean Jacobs. By the halfway point of the 15 mile run, Nier
had slipped past Kahne for second, with K. Jacobs also passing
Paulus for fourth position. Danny Smith slowed with a flat tire on
lap 16, bringing out a caution, but Haudenschild remained on top
following the restart over Nier and Kahne. Nier pulled right up to
the leader on lap 27, but was unable to make a successful pass for
the lead, allowing Haudenschild to motor away the last two laps for
the win.
"I was somewhat suprised at how I performed," Nier said
afterward. "I think he (Haudenschild) slowed down."
Kahne's third was the best All Star finish of his young career,
"I'm proud of finishing third this evening. Starting on the
front was an advantage, however I knew Haud was coming up on me and
I couldn't hold him off."
Ninth starting D. Jacobs finished fourth in the Jr. Holbrook
machine, with Paulus holding on for fifth and K. Jacobs sixth.
Fast timer Butch Schroeder finished seventh, earning the
"Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award with Byron Reed,
Wisconsin visitor Donnie Goeden and Danny Smith, recovering from his
flat, next.
The United Expressline heat fell to D. Jacobs, the Southwest
Expressline heat to Rocky Hodges, the Southwest Glass heat was won
by Kent Wolters and the United Specialties heat went to Smith. Kenny
Jacobs won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with Kyle Sauder
the United Expressline B Main winner. Schroeder was the Red Devil
Brakes fast qualifier.
