All Star Sprint Race Results - Grandview Speedway, (PA) - Wed. 5/5/99

BECHTELSVILLE, PA - It was all Fred Rahmer in the All Star sprint 35-lap Thunder on the Hill feature Wednesday night at Grandview Speedway. For Rahmer, he earned his fourth career Thunder victory after taking the lead on lap seven when P.J. Chesson spun while leading. Rahmer, aboard Al Hamilton’s Chevrolet-powered No. 77, held off a late race charge by Jeff Shepard who went to the rear after being involved in a wild first lap crash. The Philadelphia Daily News and NAPA Auto Parts sponsored the first of five Thunder events of 1999 with the next show set for Sunday, June 27. In the All Star feature Greg Hodnett, Dean Jacobs and Greg Wilson tangled at the start of the feature with Hodnett and Jacobs flipping wildly down the homestretch at the drop of the green. All driven walked away uninjured but the equipment was heavily damaged Frankie Kerr and Jeff Shepard also sustained damage in the crash. The restart saw P.J. Chesson set the pace and he stayed on top until lap seven when he spun in turn three. This turned the lead over to Rahmer who moved into second just one lap earlier. At the drop of the green for the restart, Rahmer was off and running with Dave Ely, Keith Kauffman, Cris Eash and Lance Dewease in the chase. All eyes were watching Shepard in the ZEMCO sprinter who was already racing in the top five by lap fifteen, Rahmer was setting the pace and working his way through lapped traffic with Kauffman now in second and Eash third. On lap twenty-two, Judi Bates and Don Kreitz Jr. tangled and spun in turn three. The restart saw Rahmer, Kauffman, Shepard, Eash and Dewease make up the top five. Lapped traffic, between Rahmer and the other top five cars gave him the advantage to quickly build a comfortable lead Johnny Mackison spun in turn two on lap twenty-nine and with just five laps to go, Kauffman and Shepard had their final chance to take a run at Rahmer for the win, Rahmer quickly got away from the field on the restart as Shepard passed Kauffman for the runner-up spot. Rahmer took the win and collected the $5,000 payday with Shepard second, Kauffman third, Cris Eash fourth and Lance Dewease fifth, Should Rahmer sweep all the Thunder Series sprint features of 1999, he could cam in excess of $30,000, including at $5,000 bonus posted by NAPA Auto Parts. A field of thirty-one sprint cars took part in the All Star sprint show. During time trials, Jeff Shepard set a new one lap track record of 11,824 to claim the GALCO Business Communications fast time $200 bonus. As a result of the new track record, Shepard also stands to collect a $1,000 bonus from GALCO, should the record stand through the August Thunder Series finale. The KARS sprints were also on the program and Cris Eash won the "only chance" qualifier as Mark Richard won the twenty Lap feature. Dale Hammaker finished second followed by Kevin Drury with Rick Horn fourth and Mike Lehman fifth.

The United Expressline heat fell to Todd Gracey, the Southwest Expressline heat to Shawn Keen, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Paul McMahan and the United Specialties heat went to Johnny Mackison, Jr. Brian Paulus won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with P.J. Chesson the United Expressline B Main winner.
