All Star Sprint Race Results - ELDORA Speedway, Rossburg, OH - Sat.
5/15/99 By Scott Hall
ROSSBURG, OH - All Star points leader Kenny Jacobs led wire to
wire and held off a hard charge by Joey Saldana at the end to win
his 18th career Eldora Speedway All Star sprint 30-lap feature
Saturday night on $10 general admission night. Byron Reed ended up
third. "It wasn’t easy," Jacobs recalled. "When
Joey Saldana’s behind you it’s not going to be easy. I knew
exactly what was going to happen on that last lap. But the Eagle
chassis, Goodyear, Kriner-Chevy engine car worked so good it took
off like a bullet on that last start. Les and Lynda Stewart started
helping me the last week or so and this is Les’s motor here
tonight and I think this is the first one he’s ever won at Eldora
and I’m so happy to get it for him." Jacobs drives his own
machine, wrenched by Barry Jackson and Lee Jacobs. Once Dean Jacobs
dropped out of second with mechanical problems on lap ten, Saldana,
who started sixth, ran second the rest of the way.
"We were pretty good. I wish we could have got into lapped
traffic," Saldana revealed when asked about his last lap slide
job try on Jacobs. "You can’t do it (pass) in just a lap. You
need to work on him pretty good to get by him." Kenny Jacobs
started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot Seat pole
position for the 15 mile run with his brother Dean alongside. K.
Jacobs shot into the lead on the initial green with Dean in tow.
Kenny stretched his advantage as third starting Reed held third
ahead of Saldana and Butch Schroeder. K. Jacobs held his lead and
even stretched it in lapped traffic, running the high groove only
inches from Eldora’s concrete wall. Saldana got Reed for third on
lap ten just as D. Jacobs fell by the wayside with engine problems,
so the order was Kenny, Saldana, Reed and Schroeder when a lap 12
yellow appeared for a stalled Kasey Kahne in turn four. Jacobs
rocketed away on the restart, with Saldana trying to stay close but
to no avail. The action for fifth was heating up among Ed Lynch Jr.,
and Paul McMahan, as Lynch tried to get around Schroeder for fourth.
Lynch took fourth on lap 16 as Kenny motored away with a half a lap
lead on Saldana. Now Jac Haudenschild moved in on Schroeder, and the
pair waged war side by side as did McMahan and Nier for eighth.
Tenth place runner Dale Blaney broke his front end and stopped on
the track on lap 21 for another caution with the order Kenny,
Saldana, Reed, Lynch, Schroeder, Haudenschild, Frankie Kerr and Nier.
On this restart, Saldana stayed within striking distance of Jacobs
and both ran high, up against the wall. Schroeder repassed Lynch
following the restart, then Haudenschild passed Lynch for fifth on
lap 26. Ninth place McMahan stopped on the track with a flat tire on
lap 29, setting up a green-white-checkered dash to the finish line.
Saldana dove under Jacobs going into turn one following the restart
cone, getting beside Kenny, but he didn’t have enough momentum to
make the lead pass. Jacobs drove on to a win by two seconds over
Saldana, with Reed third and Lynch fourth. Haudenschild exploded a
right rear on the last lap, failing to finish and dropping him form
a third place finish and Schroeder also had problems on the last
lap, stopping on the track also as the checkered flew. That put Nier
fifth with Kerr sixth and Paulus finished seventh, earning the
"Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award. The top ten was
rounded out by Jerrod Hull, who started 15th, Danny Smith and
McMahan. "My car was great in the beginning," third place
finisher Reed said. "We have a new Kistler motor and it was
really driving forward, bus as we went ion it got a little loose,
but it still wasn’t too bad." The United Expressline heat
fell to Shepard, the Southwest Expressline heat to Chad Kemenah, the
Southwest Glass heat was won by Frankie Kerr and the United
Specialties heat went to Haudenschild. Butch Schroeder won the
Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with Nick Naber the United
Expressline B Main winner while Saldana was the Red Devil Brakes
fast qualifier. Eldora’s fans donated $2,702 to injured driver
Kevin Huntley during intermission when sprint drivers went through
the stands to take up a collection for the driver injured here
earlier this season.
