All Star Sprint Race Results - K-C Raceway - Sat. 6/19/99
By Scott Hall
ALMA, OH - Byron Reed started on the front row and held off a
hard charging Chad Kemenah to win the All Star sprint 40-lap feature
on "The Night The Stars Come Out" Saturday at K-C Raceway.
The win paid Reed $7,000 for his second career All Star win aboard
the B&S Racing Kistler-Chevrolet powered Maxim in which he led
39 laps. "This year we really stepped up our program and
started winning some races," Reed recalled. "We had a bad
couple nights the last few races but this makes up for it. I have to
give a lot of credit to my helper Brandon, my dad Sam, they’re
always pushing me to do better. And I want to thank my mom, and my
wife Kelly for putting up with all of this." Kemenah started
Jim Harble’s J&J on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot
Seat pole position with Reed alongside. Reed rode the high grove
into the lead, with Kemenah second and Butch Schroeder third. Kenny
and Dean Jacobs hooked up in a brotherly battle for fourth, with
Kenny prevailing for that spot on lap six. After a quick yellow for
a stalled Brian Ellenberger, Reed led again when the green was
dropped, with Kenny passing Schroeder for third with a low move
through turns three and four. Reed pulled away from Kemenah a bit,
but Kemenah kept close, and reeled in the leader, actually making a
pass for the lead with and inside move on lap 15 to lead at the
flagstand, but Reed got him back in turns one and two. It was a nose
to tail battle among the leaders, with Kenny sitting in third,
waiting to make a move if either one of them slipped up. On lap 18
they were side by side, but Reed was still on top. When the leaders
entered lapped traffic on lap 26, Reed began to pull away from
Kemenah, who was just ahead of Kenny, Schroeder, Dean and Mark
Keegan. Keegan did a 360 degree spin on lap 28, losing four spots
when he got his machine pointed the right way. By lap 32, tires were
beginning to burn off due to the abrasive surface, and Greg Wilson
dropped from eighth with a flat. Then on lap 35, Dean fell from
fifth with a flat, and lap 38 saw Schroeder and Boston Reid both
stop to change their flats. This set up a two lap dash to the end,
in which Reed held off Kemenah and Kenny with all three having
mostly bald tires. "I would have liked to seen it go
non-stop" runner-up Kemenah revealed. "But we’ll take a
second. It was just a good race. There was only one place to be, and
that was right in the rubber," he added, referring to the lower
and middle grooves of the 3/8 mile. Following Jacobs was Jim Nier,
who passed Danny Smith near the end and was challenging Jacobs when
the checkered fell. Smith was fifth, with Rodney Duncan sixth and
Keegan was seventh, earning the "Team Simpson Racing Lucky
Seven" award. Jimmy Stinson, Joe Gaerte and Randy Kinser
completed the top ten.
The United Expressline heat fell to Kelly Kinser, the Southwest
Expressline heat to Jerrod Hull, the Southwest Glass heat was won by
Jim Nier and the United Specialties heat went to Alvin Roepke. K.
Jacobs won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with Byron Reed
the United Expressline B Main winner. Keith Crabtree won the Georgia
Marketing & Promotions C Main and Rocky Hodges was the fast
qualifier, worth $500 from Chillicothe Fireworks but he failed to
qualify for the feature. It was also TW Metals bonus night, with TW
Metals paying out $450 in bonuses in $75 increments to various
finishers in the A and B Mains. Steve Shaver won the 40-lap STARS
late model main after Donnie Moran, who led the first 39 laps,
stopped on the track with electrical problems. Chub Frank was second
and Mike Balzano third.
