ORRVILLE, OH - Joey Saldana was victorious in the 17th annual All
Star sprint Ohio Speedweek opening 30-lap feature Monday night at
Wayne Co. Speedway. An excellent field of 51 cars were on hand with
partisan crowd in the Pete Jacobs Memorial Race. Saldana was leading
on lap 19 when Jacobs drove high around him coming through turns one
and two. Saldana drifted high to block the move, running into
Jacobs, breaking Jacobs’ front wing mounts and causing Jacobs’
front wing to flip back as Saldana maintained the lead. "I was
on the bottom and I didn’t know the top was there," Saldana
related. "I saw the top and went to the top, otherwise I was
going to lose the race. I know this isn’t the way I like to win
but you’ve got to get them somehow. I saw someone on the outside
and I knew I was going to get passed so I went to the top."
Saldana drove the Steve Mox Stealth, with Fisher-Chevy power, to the
win, his second of the season. "It took me right out of winning
the race," Dean said of his view of the incident with Saldana.
"I had him flat beat and he didn’t like that so he ran over
me. It’s as simple as that." Then Dean concluded, "We
had a race car good enough to win the race, we just ran
second." Alvin Roepke started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports
Equipment Hot Seat pole position with Saldana alongside. Saldana
grabbed the lead before Scott Miller spun with one lap complete.
Saldana pulled away again on the restart from Roepke, Ed Lynch, Jr.,
Kelly Kinser and Chad Kemenah. Saldana continued to build his lead
on the 3/8 mile until a Paul Weaver spin on lap four. Phil Gressman
stopped with a flat at this point, dropping him from sixth position.
After another restart a lap later for a spinning Rocky Hodges,
Saldana pulled away again as Lynch took over second when Roepke
bobbled a bit coming off turn two. Saldana held a nice lead over
Lynch, Rodney Duncan, Roepke and D. Jacobs, who started seventh. By
the halfway mark, Dean was up to third with Duncan fourth and Kenny
Jacobs fifth after starting 13th. Dean, aboard Jr. Holbrook’s
Eagle Chassis, passed Lynch for second on the high side on lap 16
and was moving in on Saldana. They ran side-by-side on lap 18, and
entering turn one on lap 19, Dean rode the high groove with Saldana
low. Exiting turn two, Saldana drove up the track into the high
groove, making contact with Dean and keeping the lead. Jacobs’
handling was affected by the contact, allowing Lynch to get by for
second on lap 27, but Dean got him back on lap 29 to finish in the
runner-up slot. Lynch was third with K. Jacobs fourth, Duncan fifth
and Kinser sixth. Byron Reed finished seventh, earning the
"Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award ahead of Danny
Smith, Roepke and Mark Keegan.
"We got into second and were moving good and the left rear
tire went flat the last two laps," Lynch recalled of third.
"I don’t know how I finished." The United Expressline
heat fell to Saldana, the Southwest Expressline heat to K. Jacobs,
the Southwest Glass heat was won by Danny Smith and the United
Specialties heat went to Canada’s Jimmy Carter. Joe Gaerte won the
Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with Todd Kelley the United
Expressline B Main winner. Tim Kern won the Georgia Marketing &
Promotions C Main and K. Kinser was the fast qualifier.
