All Star Sprint Race Results - Attica Raceway Park - Wed. 7/14/99
By Scott Hall
ATTICA, OH - Butch Schroeder led only the last few feet of the
race to win the tenth annual All Star sprint Brad Doty Classic
40-lap feature Wednesday night at Attica Raceway Park. The win was
worth $5,000 and came after passing Joey Saldana in the final turn
as the two leaders made contact, with Schroeder gathering in his
Maxim and crossing the finish line half a car length ahead of
Saldana. He became the 10th different Doty Race winner in ten
events.
"I knew we had a good car. Tim put the right tires on, Tom
turned the right wrenches, Jim made the right selection on the bars
and Paul Kistler builds one hell of an engine," Schroeder
exclaimed from victory lane. "We were both going for it at the
end. I didn't know who won at first. I thought we might be on our
lid and I was hoping to cross the line first if we were."
Schroeder said of his collision with Saldana. Schroeder and his
family own their own Maxim, sponsored by Burns Electric, with
Kistler-Chevy power and utilizing Goodyear Tires.
Runner-up Saldana recalled, "I started working the bottom
and I felt really good. He (Schroeder) just got a good run off the
corner and won the race. I was just spinning the wheels real bad off
four at the end."
Greg Hodnett started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot
Seat pole position in the Apple No. 12 with Saldana alongside in the
Steve Mox Stealth. Hodnett led with Saldana second, Byron Reed third
and Schroeder fourth. Kasey Kahne started sixth, and was fifth when
he spun into the infield on lap three, but kept moving, dropping way
back in the pack. By lap seven the leaders were in lapped traffic,
and Hodnett and Saldana were nose to tail on lap nine, with Saldana
grabbing the lead on lap ten running through turns three and four.
After four cautions on the next four laps, the drivers settled down
again with Saldana leading in the low groove over Hodnett, Schroeder
and Fred Rahmer, who started 14th. Rahmer passed Schroeder low going
down the backstretch on lap 17 for third and the leaders got back
into lapped traffic again on lap 23.
Rahmer took over second behind Saldana on lap 25, but Schroeder
began to make a move in the middle groove of the slick third-mile.
He disposed of Hodnett, then passed Rahmer for second on lap 28.
Schroeder was slowly reeling in Saldana and a lap 37 caution set up
a three lap run to the checkered. Saldana ran the low groove after
the green reappeared with Schroeder in the middle groove. The white
flag came out with Saldana a car length ahead of Schroeder. Down the
backstretch Schroeder pulled even with Saldana's back bumper and
going into turn three, they were side by side and Schroeder drove up
around Saldana in the middle grove, inching ahead coming off turn
four. Saldana drove high to block Schroeder and the pair collided,
both getting slightly sideways with Schroeder recovering more
quickly to cross the finish line first. Rahmer was third with Kelly
Kinser fourth after starting 19th. Frankie Kerr was next, with Paul
McMahan sixth and Dean Jacobs finished seventh, earning the
"Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award. Hodnett, Rodney
Duncan and Kenny Jacobs completed the top ten as Kenny came all the
way from the back after a lap 13 pit stop.
Rahmer said of third, "I wasn't smart enough to move up
where Butch was running. He rolled into the center and if I'd have
drove a little better I could have gotten a little better result.
It's nice to run a race for Brad Doty because by far he was the
nicest outlaw driver there ever was."
The United Expressline heat fell to Kelly Kinser, the Southwest
Expressline heat to Fred Rahmer, the Southwest Glass heat was won by
Jac Haudenschild and the United Specialties heat went to Rob Chaney.
Each heat win paid $100, courtesy of Burns Electric. Jeff Shepard
won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with Dean Jacobs the
United Expressline B Main winner after changing an engine following
his heat. The winner of the six lap Burns Electric fan's dash, worth
$400 was Butch Schroeder and Kasey Kahne was the fast qualifier,
worth $1,000 from Ramsey Trucking.
