All Star Sprint Race Results - K-C Raceway - Sat. 7/31/99 By
Scott Hall
ALMA, OH - In a stunning upset, Elmore, Ohio's Alvin Roepke
scored his first career All Star feature win in the Freedom 40
Saturday night at K-C Raceway. The win was worth $10,000 to Roepke,
who runs at K-C on a weekly basis, and who started 14th in the
field. A total of 45 cars were on hand with Joey Saldana the fast
qualifier.
Roepke passed race long leader Frankie Kerr with only five laps
to go to seal the win. Roepke owns his own Dowker-Chevrolet powered
machine, and won on K-C's spec McCreary American Racer Tires.
"All of a sudden on that last restart, we just passed
them," Roepke exclaimed after the popular win. "I never
though we'd be sitting here tonight. It's fantastic. What a
night!" Roepke's machine is sponsored by Cicanese Metals, TW
Metals, Tim Engler Machine and Joe Darmofal Racing. Ropeke's crew
includes Jim Ford and a pair of teenage mechanics.
"Our Goodyear's wouldn't take off," Kerr said of
second." All those reds and yellows killed us. McCreary tires
just came on at the end."
With Kerr starting on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot
Seat pole position alongside Jac Haudenschild, Kerr bolted into the
lead in Stan Shoff's No. 23s with Haudenschild in tow. Kenny Jacobs
tucked in for third with Paul McMahan fourth. The top four ran that
way through a lap 10 caution for the stopped cars of Byron Reed and
Kasey Kahne. Kahne was in eighth spot and glanced off the
frontstretch wall, breaking the front end of his machine. He had to
be towed off but Reed continued. Saldana was on the move after
starting sixth and falling back to seventh. He passed Mark Keegan
for sixth a lap after the restart and began chasing Chad Kemenah for
fifth.
At the halfway mark, Kerr led over Haudenschild, Jacobs, McMahan
and Saldana. In traffic again on lap 22, Haudenschild moved right up
on Kerr, while McMahan got around Jacobs for third. Then it became a
three way dogfight for the lead. Kerr and Haudenschild came up on
the lapped machine of Ed Neumeister on lap 28, with the leaders
making a Neumeister sandwich, but when Haudenschild darted high
around the lapped machine, losing a front wheel, he tagged the
frontstretch wall exiting turn four, sending him into a barrel roll
flip down the front stretch.
The race restarted following the cleanup, but Dean Jacobs, Jim
Nier and Kevin Huntley slid off turn four, with D. Jacobs and Nier
flopping over on their sides. Only Nier was eliminated. The restart
order was now Kerr, McMahan, Saldana, K. Jacobs, Chad Kemenah,
Roepke and Hull. Kerr led again when the green flew, with Saldana
taking second from McMahan after the restart.
On lap 30, Saldana dove low under Kerr off turn four and the
leaders crossed the stripe side-by-side. Saldana repeated the move
on lap 31 to take the lead, but Kerr dove low in turns one and two
and drove up in front of the rim riding Saldana, colliding with the
leader and pushing him off the lip of the track for another caution.
Roepke went low to take seconmd after the restart, and all eyes
were on him now as he seemingly came out of nowhere to contend for
the win. He was reeling in Kerr in the low groove of the rubber
laden surface, and on lap 34, the leaders were side-by-side and
Roepke ducked ahead to lead lap 35 at the start-finish line, and
pulled away to a full straightaway win. Kerr finished second in Stan
Shoff's machine, with Hull's Guy Webb Wesmar-Eagle third, McMahan
fourth, K. Jacobs fifth and Butch Schroeder next in the Daugherty
Kistler-powered Eagle.
Mark Keegan finished seventh, earning the "Team Simpson
Racing Lucky Seven" award. Saldana came back from the rear to
finish eight, followed by Rodney Duncan, up from 10th and Kemenah.
"We just had a bad qualifying run and had to start
20th," third place Hull recalled. "Once we got through
traffic the car started working good. I have to thank McCreary tires
and my crew who worked hard all night."
The United Expressline heat fell to Hull, the Southwest
Expressline heat to Byron Reed, the Southwest Glass heat was won by
Nier and the United Specialties heat went to Danny Smith. Kerr won
the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with Kemenah the United
Expressline B Main winner. Jim Gibbs won the modified feature.
