Salem Race Report 1999-08-22

Dave Darland of Kokomo, Ind. capped a fabulous weekend of racing
with his triumph in Sunday afternoon's 50-lap Emge/JayC Food Stores "Joe
James/Pat O'Connor Classic" at the Salem (Ind.) Speedway. Darland, who
also won Saturday's "Tony Bettenhausen 100" Coors Light Silver Bullet race
at Springfield, Ill., led the final 24 laps of Sunday's race in his
Kroger/Pringles/Sunny Delight Special to win the longest race on the 1999
Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car calendar.
Darland was running second when fast qualifier Dave Steele tapped
another car and spun in turn two while leading on lap 27. Steele rejoined
the race but eventually retired from competition. Darland then led the
final 24 laps to beat Ryan Newman, Jason McCord, Billy Puterbaugh, Jr. and
Steve Surniak. Brian Gerster led the first 13 laps before yielding to
Steele, but slipped to sixth at the finish.
Darland continues to lead the standings in the Stoops Freightliner
Series, which visits two Indiana dirt tracks this weekend.
Bloomington Speedway hosts Friday night's "Sheldon Kinser
Memorial," which offers additional incentive in the form of $4,000 in lap
prizes, half of which go to the driver leading each lap of the 40-lap
feature event and half of which goes to the Rich Vogler Scholarship Fund.
Saturday night's contest is the "Danny Milburn Classic" at the
Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway.
Practice at Bloomington gets under way at 5:30 pm, followed by
qualifying at 6:30 and racing at 7:30. Lawrenceburg's timetable has
practice at 6, qualifying at 7 and racing at 8. The Lawrenceburg feature
is a 30-lapper.
