Dollansky Wins Inaugural Gumout Series Event
By Kendra Jacobs
SARVER, PA (April 14)-Craig Dollansky has won many feature
events throughout his racing career, but his win at Lernerville
Speedway tonight was historic. Dollansky will forever be known
as the first winner of a Gumout Series event.
"I'd like to thank Ted Johnson and the World of Outlaws
for putting this series together," Dollansky said in
victory lane. "I think it's going to be an exciting and
good series."
Dollansky's Kriner powered Maxim led all 35 laps of the
Gumout Series feature event. "My crew did a great job. I
can't thank Karavan and Scott Boyd enough. He's been a
tremendous impact on my racing career and this whole race team.
Without him we wouldn't be here. Polydome and Dick Johanik, he's
been another big supporter of mine. I'm fortunate to be
surrounded by a lot of good people."
Craig Dollansky surged to an early lead with the 4J of Jeff
Shepard and the U2 of Paul McMahan not far behind. Racing action
was quickly slowed on lap two, when Rodney Duncan in the 22 slid
off of the track in turn three. At the restart it was Dollansky,
followed by Shepard, McMahan, Shane Stewart and P.J. Chesson.
A red on lap three stopped the action completely. Mike
Goodman in the red #3 drove into turn three hard, collecting
James Chesson in the process. Goodman's sprinter turned over as
the two cars drove over the embankment. Neither car re-started.
The restart saw Dollansky, Shepard, and McMahan in a tight
battle for the lead. The trio began to pull away from the now
21-car field. The excitement was soon paused as Lance Dewease in
the Harz #88 drove over the turn four embankment. Dewease
restarted on the tail.
Only three laps later, the 9H of Stewart was slowing to a
stop along the front stretch wall. Shane Stewart, then in sixth
position, suffered a broken torsion arm. The car was towed to
the pit area.
Racing ensued with the three leaders again pulling away from
the rest of the field. Dollansky went high on the outside, while
Shepard continuously dove to the inside looking for any
possibility to get by the 7. McMahan stayed in the fight as he
too rode the cushion high in turns three and four.
Lap 17 brought out the second red of the evening as P.J.
Chesson turned over between turns three and four. Just before
the red dropped, Dean Jacobs slid over the edge of turn two,
putting him on the tail at the restart.
When the green flag dropped again, it was still Dollansky,
Shepard and McMahan, now followed by Brad Furr in the 2F and
Kasey Kahne in the 23K.
The race leaders quickly got into lapped traffic bring the
trio into even tighter racing quarters. On lap 23 the traffic
got to be too much, as McMahan found himself in the back of
Shepard. Shepard spun into the infield, as McMahan continued.
The yellow dropped, putting second place running Shepard on the
tail.
Racing resumed with a now two-car battle for the lead.
McMahan, like Shepard, tried to duck under Dollansky but
couldn't pull off the pass. Furr was now in second with Kahne
and Kenny Jacobs finishing the top five.
Lap 25 saw the final delay in racing action, when three cars
piled up just before the flagstand on the front stretch. Kelly
Kinser, Ronald Laney, and Jason Meyers all collided. The 52 of
Laney and the 4K of Kinser turned over.
Dollansky again pulled out to an instant lead. McMahan tried
desperately to make a move in the last ten laps, but to no
success. Dollansky earned his way into victory lane. McMahan
went home second. Furr, K.Jacobs and Frankie Kerr rounded out
the top five for the night.
Kasey Kahne crossed the finish line in sixth position. After
going to the tail on lap 23, Shepard fought his way back up to
seventh. Byron Reed, 22nd starting Jimmy Hawley and Dean Jacobs
completed the top ten.
Huggins fast qualifier James Chesson set a new track record
at a time of 12.492. This new record broke Mark Kinser's
previous record with a time of 12.692.
Jason Meyers was named the KSE Hard Charger for passing nine
competitors on his way to a 14th place finish in the feature
event. The Frankland Hard Luck Award went to Mike Goodman, as he
was the first Gumout Series member to drop out of contention.
