ALMA, OH - Kasey Kahne outlasted Rodney Duncan and Frankie Kerr Saturday night at K-C Raceway in the All Star sprint 40-lap feature to take home a $5,000 victory. First Kahne and Duncan waged a torrid battle for the lead on the high banked 3/8 mile, then Kerr challenged, but Kahne finished strong at the end despite running off the top of the track on lap 36, but he was able to gather it back in and remain in the lead. "I thought I wasn't going to come back on," Kahne recalled of his off track excursion. "I thought I screwed up my race. I just feathered the throttle and the thing came back on (the track)." He then described his last pass for the lead following a restart. "I knew if I got a good enough of a restart I would try a slide job right there at the start, it would be the easiest point. I just took advantage of the bottom and slid up in front of him (Duncan)." Kahne drove the Hoosier shod Maxim with Don-Ott Chevrolet power, with Dave Dewitt and Kelly Kahne sponsoring the winning machine and his crew chief is his cousin, Willie Kahne. Kahne started on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole with All Star points leader Rodney Duncan alongside. Greg Wilson and Chad Kemenah were in row two with Butch Schroeder starting fifth and Jim Nier started sixth after being the fast qualifier over the 42 car field. On the first attempt to start, Brian Ellenberger and Kenny Jacobs both got flat tires when the field bunched up, and Ellenberger changed his tire and Jacobs got back out after fixing a broken front end. Then, after a lap was in Eric Hysong rode over a right rear tire and went into the turn one concrete hard. Kahne ran the high groove into the lead with Duncan second and Kemenah third. Several times Kahne dove low in turns three and four, checking out the inner groove to block Duncan. Duncan kept using the low groove, inching closer to Kahne and taking the lead on lap nine. Craig McGuire spun on lap 12 just as Kahne was poised to pass Duncan for the lead. On the restart, Duncan pulled away slightly and Kahne decided to concentrate on the highest groove, and began gaining on the leader. Kahne passed Duncan for the lead on lap 16, but Duncan regained the point a turn later. Kahne officially led a lap on lap 18 by a bumper width at the flagstand, but Duncan was once again on top the next circuit. Kahne made another move for the lead the next lap, but Hud Horton's lapped machine blocked his way. Brian Ellenberger spun on lap 20, slowing the furious action with Duncan leading Kahne, Kemenah, Kerr, Nier and Dean Jacobs, who went to the infield and had to restart on the rear of the pack. Kahne dove low under Duncan when the leaders passed the cone for the restart, taking the lead once again and he began pulling away from Duncan. Kerr disposed of Kemenah for third, and closed quickly on Duncan. The pair were side by side for second behind Kahne when Horton slipped off the edge of turn three and took a hard series of flips off the end of the turn. He was examined by the ambulance crew with a sore neck and back. The drivers were able to refuel under the red flag, poised for the final 13 laps. Kahne led strong on the final restart, pulling away to a huge lead as Duncan and Kerr fought tooth and nail for second with Duncan prevailing at the end, a quarter lap behind the winner. "He was just better than us," Duncan recalled of second. "We just need to be better," concluded the driver of Al Harrison's machine. "We just started too far back," Kerr said of third. "We didn't need all those yellows and reds. Our tires cooled off. Then we got to racing Rodney there and that was it." Kemenah held on for fourth, with Nier fifth and Greg Wilson sixth. Kelly Kinser finished seventh, winning the Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven award, ahead of Butch Schroeder, Danny Smith and Kenny Jacobs, who came up through the pask from last starting spot. As the main was lining up to start, Randy Kinser's machine could not start with electrical problems, allowing alternate Daryl Stimeling into the field. The heats went to Todd Gracey, Eric Hysong, Kelly Kinser and Greg Wilson. Fast qualifier Jim Nier won the B Main and Dean Jacobs captured the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash. Boston Reid hit the turn four concrete and flipped in hot laps, ending his evening and Marty Ling flipped hard in the B Main. He was not injured. Mark Frazier won the late model main. Time Trials: 1.
