All Star Sprint Ohio Speedweek Results - Attica Raceway Park
By Scott Hall
ATTICA, OH - Sun. 6/25/00 - Jeff Shepard used a late race charge
to pass Frankie Kerr for the win Sunday night at Attica Raceway Park
in the All Star sprint 30-lap opening feature of the 18th annual
Ohio Sprint Speedweek. The $5,000 to win race was run in front of a
standing room only crowd and it was Shepard's first All Star win of
the season in Les and Lynda Stewart's Kriner-Chevrolet powered Eagle
riding on Hoosier Tires. Todd Gracey started on the ButlerBuilt Hot
Seat pole with Kerr alongside. Gracey led the first 23 laps until
Kerr got by with a high move going down the backstretch on lap 24.
Then Shepard, who was running third after starting fifth also went
high to take second from Gracey. Lap 25 saw fifth place Kelly Kinser
execute a 360 degree spin, dropping him back to ninth as he kept
moving. Kerr looked like he had the race in the bag, but Shepard
never gave up, as he moved high after seeing Kerr use the high
groove. Coming down to take the white flag, Shepard dove under Kerr
in turn four and drifted up in front of him to lead at the flagstand.
Kerr re-passed Shepard in the middle of the backstretch, but Shepard
pulled ahead in turns three and four to grab the narrow victory as
the crowd roared their approval. "He went real good around the
top," Shepard said of Kerr. "I was trying to get around
the 25 (Gracey) on the bottom and I saw him (Kerr) go around the top
and I said 'Oh No' so I went to the top and followed him around a
couple of laps. So I went back to the bottom and I got underneath
him and slid up and took his line, then he took my line and it was
just a heck of a race." Shepard credited his new crew chief,
Dean "Bonzai" Bruns and the rest of the crew for their
hard work tonight. "I love this place," Shepard concluded.
Kerr, aboard Stan Shoff's J&J, also on Hoosiers, finished
second. "I was getting a little loose, I just tried to go as
fast as I could in my line, I tried the bottom and I wasn't very
good," Kerr revealed. "Maybe I should have tried to block
him, I tried to use momentum to get a victory." Third starting
Duncan finished in that same spot in the Harrison Trucking machine.
"I was having a lot of fun watching those guys bang
around," Duncan recalled. "I thought we might win by
default there for a second. We need long green lap runs, it seemed
like the longer we went the better my car got locked down to the
track," the All Star points leader concluded. Gracey held on
for third, disappointed after leading the most laps. Kenny Jacobs,
who ran strong in the mid portion of the race, was fifth with ninth
starter Jimmy Hawley sixth. Chad Kemenah finished seventh, winning
the Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven award. In eighth, Greg Wilson
captured the TW Metals nightly cash bonus after starting 15th.
Kinser came back for ninth and Mark Keegan, who started fourth,
finished tenth. The $100 to win heats went to Greg Wilson, Kevin
Huntley, Jimmy Hawley and Jim Nier. Kemenah won the Georgia
Marketing & Promotions B Main. Kinser captured the Commercial
Truck & Trailer Dash and Jack Hewitt won the C main. Fast time
was worth $300 from Ramsey Trucking for Kenny Jacobs. The $5,000
Baumann Automotive 15th or greater starting bonus was also in
effect, but again went unclaimed. In the limited late model main, it
was Mike Marteney coming home the winner over Larry Kingseed, Steve
Sabo, Jim Gingery and Dale Aikman. {TB} Time Trials: 1. Kenny
