All Star Sprint Race Results - Sharon Speedway - Sat. 9/2/00
By Scott Hall
HARTFORD, OH - It was a heartbreak for Rob Chaney. And it was
the second win of the season for Jeff Shepard in the All Star
sprint race Saturday night at Sharon Speedway. The 20th annual
Sharon Nationals preliminary win was worth $5,000 to the Maryland
driver in the Double L Racing No. 4J, aboard Goodyear tires and
powered by a Kriner-Chevrolet engine. Chaney had led laps 1-23
until he hit a rut and blew his left rear tire, handing the lead
and win to Shepard. "The track was real rough tonight, it was
fast but it was rough. I'm just real happy that my car all stayed
together." Shepard stated. "My crew did a good job of
keeping all the nuts and bolts together." After starting
fifth, Sean Michael took over second when Shepard took the lead
and finished a quarter lap behind. "I think we had a sick
cylinder," Michael related. "The motor just wasn't
making power all night. The track was racy when it's like this.
You just stand on the gas the whole time. I like racing like
this." Second place also earned Michael the $100 TW Metals
nightly bonus. Veteran Keith Kauffman started eighth and came home
a steady third. "This track kind of separates the men from
the boys," Kauffman said of his third place run in the
Middleswarth Potato Chip Machine.
Kenny Jacobs was on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole position with
Chaney alongside in Stan Courtad's No. 9x. James Chesson and Chad
Kemenah made up row two. Jacobs led into turn one, but Chaney
outpowered him to officially lead the first lap, and he began
pulling away from Jacobs. By the time he entered lapped traffic on
lap seven, Chaney had amassed a quarter lap lead over Jacobs,
James Chesson and Shepard. The first caution appeared on lap 19
when Danny Smith stopped on the track. He pulled pitside, and
while under caution Jacobs had to stop and change a flat as did
Todd Gracey. Chaney led over Shepard for the restart, with Michael
now third and Kauffman fourth. They ran that way until the fateful
lap 23 when Chaney hit a turn one rut hard, exploding his left
rear tire and handing the race to Shepard. Chad Kemenah ran fourth
the entire second half of the race and finished there ahead of
Byron Reed. Chesson crossed the line sixth, but came up two pounds
light at the scales. He was disqualified, putting his brother PJ
into sixth. Todd Shaffer finished seventh, earning the Team
Simpson Racing Lucky Seven award. Next were Jerrod Hull, Mike Lutz
and Jacobs. The heats went to Jerrod Hull, Kelly Kinser, Dave Ely,
Kevin Huntley and Todd Bauer. James Chesson won the Georgia
Marketing & Promotions B Main and Arnie Kent won the C Main.
C.W. Harshman captured the Alky Dash. Jeff Shepard set a new track
record of 15.710 seconds, breaking Frankie Kerr's 15.764 mark from
April 28. Lance Dewease had a tough night, with ignition problems
keeping him from starting his heat and then he fell from the C
Main with engine problems. Lou Blaney won a caution filled
modified feature, earning $2,000.
