Volusia Speedway Park Saturday race report

All Star Sprint Results - Volusia Speedway Park - Sat. 2/10/01 By Scott Hall

BARBERVILLE, FL - It was Survivor. Not in the Australian Outback, but Barberville, Florida as the "Crowd Pleaser," Craig Dollansky, made it three different winners in three nights Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park. A sellout crowd watched the Minnesota driver survive to win round three of the All Star sprint Florida Speedweek series, a 20-lap event, on Kevin Gobrecht night, in honor of the late driver who won an All Star feature here in 1999. Gobrecht’s mother Donna Long presented Dollansky with a plaque in memory of her son.

Dollansky thanked his crew from victory lane and credited Charlie Fisher engines for a strong powerplant and Hoosier for great tires. Dollansky also related that it was his good luck and a bad deal for early leader Chad Kemenah who fell out of the lead with a flat tire.

Kemenah was on the pole in Jimmy Harble’s UUI No. 15 with Danny Lasoski’s Tony Stewart 20 alongside and Lasoski took the initial lead over Kemenah, third starting Dollansky and Lance Dewease, who started fourth in the Joe Harz Racing No. 88. Lasoski was still in the lead when a red appeared on lap five for Dale Blaney, who had nowhere to go when James Chesson spun. Blaney hit Chesson and executed a slow flip.

Lining up for the restart, Lasoski had a flat tire as did James Chesson, moving them to the rear of the restart lineup and handing Kemenah the lead. The restart was waved off when Jason Johnson spun after colliding with Joey Saldana. Kemenah again led for the drop of the green, with Dollansky now second followed by Dewease and 10th starting Tim Shaffer. Several green flag laps finally were entered into the record books when Mike Wagner rolled to a stop on the speedway with a rear flat, bringing out another caution on lap 15 on the hard and slick surface. Wayne Johnson also stopped with a flat when the race restarted, bringing out yet another yellow flag. Another lap was completed with the order Kemenah, Dollansky, Dewease, Shaffer and Danny Wood when a pair of Gregs stopped on the track, Hodnett and Wilson, both with tire troubles. This brought out a red flag fuel stop.

The green reappeared, followed by an immediate red for another incident. Ronald Laney flipped over the turn two wall after contact with Joe Roe. But this spelled disaster for Kemenah, who appeared headed to his first win of the season, as he too had a flat tire.

Dollansky inherited the lead and his Hoosier Tires held up for the win as he led the final four circuits. Dewease held on for second, his third top three finish in a row while battling the flu. Wood started tenth and finished third with Shaffer fourth and 20th qualifier Todd Gracey fifth. Travis Rilat, from the last row was sixth with Saldana seventh, Kim Mock eighth and Rodney Duncan ninth. Terry McCarl completed the top ten.

The K-T Equipment heat went to Danny Lasoski; the JB Enterprise Racing Products heat to Rodney Duncan; the Crown Battery Heat to Joey Saldana; the Engler Machine & Tool heat to Dale Blaney; and won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main to Dean Jacobs; while the B Main was won by Rodney Duncan.
