BARBERVILLE, FL - In a repeat of last year's performance, Danny
Lasoski captured the $7,000 winner's check Sunday night at Volusia
Speedway Park in the All Star sprint 30-lap feature. In front of
another standing room only crowd, Lasoski became the fourth
different winner in four nights of racing at VSP, wheeling the Eagle
Chassis owned by Winston Cup Star Tony Stewart. Lasoski utilized a
powerplant built by new All Star contingency sponsor Kistler Engines
for his wire-to-wire performance.
The "Dude," from Higginsville, MO, in victory lane,
stated he "had the best crew chief in the world, Jimmy Carr,
and best owner, Tony Stewart." Stewart, who earlier in the day
captured a NASCAR checkered at Daytona, told Lasoski it would be
nice if he could win today also.
The top six in points from the previous three nights of action
were inverted for the start, putting Lasoski on the pole with Danny
Wood outside row one. Tim Shaffer and Rodney Duncan comprised the
second row, followed by Lance Dewease and Joey Saldana.
With perfect weather and a hard and slick track surface, Lasoski
took command for the 15 mile contest at the drop of the green flag,
followed by Wood and Shaffer. A Ryan Flynn spin on lap three slowed
the action, but Lasoski was able to pull away from Wood again on the
restart with Shaffer still third ahead of Saldana and seventh
starting Dale Blaney. Mike Wagner lost a left rear wheel on lap
eight for the second caution flag, with Lasoski still on top.
With one third of the event complete; Blaney made a move on
Saldana, snaring the fourth spot behind Lasoski, Wood and Shaffer,
who were working heavy lapped traffic. Lap 13 was unlucky for
California's Flynn, who tangled with Jason Sides as the running
order remained the same up front. Terry McCarl pulled off a pass for
fifth around Saldana following the restart as Lasoski was
comfortably out front. Rodney Duncan was now on the move after
fading early as he passed Saldana and McCarl to re-enter the top
five behind Lasoski, Wood, Shaffer and Blaney. In traffic Blaney
ducked around Shaffer for third on lap 18. The two battled back and
fourth for the next five circuits until Shaffer retook the spot on
lap 23. Wayne Johnson spun on lap 28, collecting Jeff Shepard,
setting up a two-lap dash to the finish for Lasoski. Lasoski kept
Wood at bay when the green came out again, but then Blaney blew a
right rear tire for yet another yellow on the white flag lap,
dropping him from fourth, moving James Chesson to that spot after
starting ninth. Lasoski led the final circuit, keeping Wood at bay
for the win.
"I just tried to put on a good show for the fans," Wood
said of his runner-up finish. "Lapped cars kept me from
catching Lasoski."
Shaffer was a steady third in his own machine, with Saldana
regaining fourth on the last restart ahead of Ronald Laney, Chesson,
Duncan, Greg Hodnett, up from 14th, Billy Pauch from the last row
and the U2 of Travis Rilat.
The K-T Equipment heat went to Blaney, the JB Enterprise Racing
Products heat to Ronald Laney, the Crown Battery Heat to James
Chesson and the Engler Machine & Tool heat to fell to Hodnett.
Flynn won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main, Jason Sides
the B Main and Shaffer captured the Haulmark Dash. A total of 48
cars were on hand.
