MORRISTOWN, OH - Dean Jacobs finally snapped his recent string of bad luck to win a feature Friday night at Cannonball Speedway in the All Star sprint 30-lap All Star vs. NCRA Eastern Showdown. The event marked the first race at the St. Clairsville oval for the All Stars since 1980. Jacobs' win came over Kelly Kinser and NCRA driver Gary Wright "We really needed this," a relieved Jacobs stated. "Dean 'Bonzai' Bruns, Matt Frische and my son Cody and all the race team worked their butts off. Winning this race means a lot since we were due. I had a really good race car tonight. I just had to be patient after Kelly (Kinser) got by me at the start and work my way back to the front." His machine is owned by Rick Daugherty, sponsored by Peterbilt of Northwest Ohio and rode Hoosier tires and utilized a Kistler engine. "Gary just slowed up and I was able to get by him the last couple of laps," runner-up Kinser said. "I really haven't had any good luck this year, maybe we're getting it turned around." "My tire sealed over and I was just hanging on," Wright said after his third place finish. "I never could catch Dean, he was just a lot better that we were." Wright's Maxim utilized a three-year old Salina powerplant under the hood. Jacobs started on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole with Kinser alongside him on the front row. Row two was made up of Rodney Duncan and NCRA points leader Wright with Kenny Jacobs and Danny Smith in row three. Kinser led the first three laps over D. Jacobs with Duncan third. On lap three, D. Jacobs went high going down the back stretch to lead lap four over Kinser, Wright and Duncan. Sean Walden spun for the first of seven cautions, with D. Jacobs still in command when the green reappeared. By lap seven, D. Jacobs led over Kinser, Wright, Duncan, K. Jacobs and eighth starter Chad Kemenah. Kemenah passed K. Jacobs the next lap for fifth and was pressuring Duncan when a caution flew for a Brad Ellenberger and Barry Ruble tangle on lap 10. Wright got a good restart and passed Kinser high off turn two for second on lap 12 just before a Jason Johnson spin. Then Kenny Jacobs dropped out the next lap with engine problems. He was running fifth at the time. Wright went high to try and pass the low running D. Jacobs on the restart, but D. Jacobs motored away and kept the lead. Duncan and Byron Reed were now battling for fourth until a lap 17 caution slowed action again. D. Jacobs held a nice lead at the 10 lap to go mark over Wright, Kinser, Duncan, Reed and Kemenah. Kemenah was putting the pressure on Reed and the pair ran side-by-side the next four laps. Then Kemenah spun out of fifth on lap 25, and had to be towed to the infield with front end damage. Meanwhile, Reed stopped on the back stretch, and restarted at the rear of the pack. This made the running order D. Jacobs, Wright, Kinser, Duncan and Danny Smith. Kinser began challenging Wright for second in the low groove, and an Aaron Berryhill and Greg Wilson collision brought out the final yellow and set up a two lap dash to the finish. Wright went very high on the restart to try and pass the leader, but Kinser instead snuck under Wright for second as D. Jacobs pulled away to a 10 car length win at the finish. Smith ended fourth with Duncan fifth and 10th starting Travis Rilat sixth. Mike Wagner finished seventh, winning the Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven award ahead of Jason Johnson and Jerrod Hull. Brian Ellenberger in tenth earned the $100 TW Metals nightly cash bonus. The K-T Equipment heat went to Greg Wilson, the JB Enterprise Racing Products heat win to Ed Lynch, Jr. and the Crown Battery heat fell to Dean Jacobs and Kenny Jacobs captured the Haulmark Dash. Danny Smith's time trial lap of 14.454 shattered Rick Ferkel's 1980 track record of 16.170 seconds. Smith dedicated his fast time award to his father Mike, who suffered a heart attach earlier in the day and is recovering in the hospital in Indiana.
