Attica Ohio Speedweek race report 2001-07-01

ATTICA. OH - Byron Reed came on strong late in the race Sunday night at Attica Raceway Park to win the All Star sprint 30-lap Ohio Speedweek opening night feature. He tracked down race-long leader Todd Kane and made the winning pass low coming off turn four to lead the final five circuits.

"Usually in the feature I'm down on the bottom. In the beginning I wasn't getting anywhere and I was starting to get held up in lapped traffic and I just kept trying it and trying it and it started working," Reed recalled, explaining his persistence to stick with Attica's lower groove. "The tire finally came in for me at the end." Reed's machine is owned by his father Sam and is a Maxim with Kistler power.

Jason Johnson started on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole in Jack Elden's No. 22 with Kane alongside in the Ray Pullins No. 29. Chad Kemenah and Kenny Jacobs were in row two ahead of Reed and Rob Chaney. Johnson went low on the start with Kane in the high groove and Kane grabbed the initial lead over Johnson and Jacobs. A Paul Weaver spin on lap five slowed the action, and the red flew on lap seven for a Danny Smith flip in turn three. The restart order was Kane, Johnson, Jacobs, Reed, Chad Kemenah, Chaney, Dean Jacobs and Greg Wilson as Smith was able to make repairs and restart.

Kane led again when the green replaced the red, with Johnson second and Reed taking third from K. Jacobs. Kane pulled away from the rest of the pack as Reed began battling with Johnson. Reed tried the high groove one lap to take a shot at Johnson, but it did not work, so he returned to the bottom of the track. Kane began slipping off the top groove in turn two almost every lap and his lead began to shrink. After the halfway mark, the leaders entered lapped traffic, allowing Johnson and Reed to close on Kane. Reed finally dove under Johnson for second on lap 24, and continued his march to the front, passing Kane for the lead on lap 25 again in the low groove. Chaney also used the low groove to grab second from Kane with just three laps remaining.

"The bottom got really good if you hugged it," Chaney said of his late race march toward the front. "I think I was as fast as Byron, but catching him and passing him was a whole different thing."

Kane was satisfied with third. "I had the lead and I wondered if I should go to the bottom or stay on top. I stayed on top. Then I saw Byron and it was too late to make a move," the pilot of the Pullins Motorsports No. 29 said.

In fourth it was Johnson, with Wilson fifth, and Chad Kemenah sixth. Dean Jacobs finished seventh, winning the Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven award ahead of Rodney Duncan and Kelly Kinser. Jerrod Hull in tenth earned the $100 TW Metals nightly cash bonus.

The K-T Equipment heat went to Paul Weaver, the JB Enterprise Racing Products heat to Mark Keegan, the Crown Battery heat to Travis Rilat and the Engler Machine & Tool heat fell to Shane Stewart. Chuck Wilson won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main and Boston Reid won the B Main. Byron Reed captured the Haulmark Dash. Rob Chaney's fast time was worth $200 from Ramsey Trucking.
