Wayne County race report

ORRVILLE, OH - Travis Rilat said after winning the dash that he would be back in victory lane after the feature. Well, his prediction came true Monday night at Wayne County Speedway in the All Star sprint 30-lap Ohio Speedweek feature. Rilat had to hold off the hard charges of Tyler Walker and Shane Stewart to record his first All Star win in front of a standing room only crowd who witnessed the event with a stellar 48 car field on hand.

"The guys had a wonderful car for me tonight," Rilat said of Chris Archer's Eagle Chassis sponsored by United Specialties. "We had a good time tonight. It's nice to run first to Tyler Walker." Rilat also said he moved his wing back on the cautions and that helped his car's handling a bit.

Rilat started on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole with Kelly Kinser outside, and Walker and Greg Wilson made up row two. John Ivy and Kenny Jacobs started in row three. On the initial start, Jason Johnson, Byron Reed and Rob Chaney tangled in turn three, bringing out the caution before a lap was in the books. Reed ended up with a smashed header and Johnson had a broken front end. Rilat pulled away from Kinser when the green fell, with Walker third and Jacobs fourth. Lee Jacobs brought out a lap five caution when he stopped on the track, and Shane Stewart made a move into fourth around Jacobs following the restart. Rilat again pulled away from Walker, who took over second from Kinser on lap eight. By lap 12, Stewart really had Junior Holbrook's machine on the move in the high groove, and disposed of Kinser, then Walker to move into second. Stewart was right on Rilat's back bumper in lapped traffic when the caution flew on lap 16 for a John Ivy flat tire.

Walker rode high around Rilat on the restart and the two bumped wheels, but Rilat kept the lead before Shane Stewart passed Walker and was side-by-side with Rilat when another caution flew when Billy Pauch hit the first turn wall on lap 18. Unfortunately, Stewart spun out in turn three as the caution light flashed on, ending his run at the front of the pack.

This put Rilat on top over Walker and Kinser with Todd Kane now up to fourth ahead of Jacobs. Rilat held the lead for the restart, but Kane bobbled in turn two and lost several positions. It was now a two car race with Rilat stretching his lead over Walker until he hit lapped traffic with five laps to go. Walker pulled in on Rilat in traffic, and even tried a low groove move on lap 29, but to no avail. Walker tried a last ditch high groove move off turn four coming down to the checkered, but Rilat won by a car length.

After doing his patented backflip on the front chute, Walker said of second, "Denny (Ashworth) just gave me a good opportunity and a good car. We were running good, Travis just drove a real good race. I had a shot at him but a car spun out and I had to get out of the gas, maybe I shouldn't have. I'm having a great time coming out here to run," Walker concluded.

Kinser held on for third over Jacobs and Dean Jacobs. Wilson was sixth with Chaney coming back to finish seventh, winning the Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven award. Kane, Kraig Kinser and Stewart completed the top ten.

The K-T Equipment heat went to Jerrod Hull, the JB Enterprise Racing Products heat to Eric Hysong, the Crown Battery heat to Johnson and the Engler Machine & Tool heat fell to Danny Smith. Tommy Burns won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main and Shane Stewart won the B Main for the second night in a row while Rilat captured the Haulmark Dash. Fast time for Kenny Jacobs was worth $100 from Kriner's Racing Engines. Rodney Duncan failed to qualify through the B Main, so he started the A Main as a provisional starter.

In the 360 sprint undercard, heats went to Tim Hunter, Paul Weaver, Greg Wilson and Darren Long. Mike Linder won the B Main. Ed Haudenschild won the main over Greg Wilson, Matt Lamborn, Tim Hunter and Doug Stanley.
