Attica race report
Attica, OH -- Kenny Jacobs and Byron Reed had a classic late-race
battle, trading the top spot twice every lap between laps 35 and 39
before Jacobs prevailed in All Star Circuit of Champions action at
Attica Raceway Park Saturday night . Jacobs' win came aboard the
Jacobs/Honecker 2002 Maxim and was worth $5,000. Reed rode the
B&S Racing Maxim to his runner-up finish. Kelly Kinser made a
late race charge to finish a close third in the Kinser Eagle
chassis.
The 40-lap main started with Greg Wilson and Dean Jacobs sharing
the front row. Wilson powered past Jacobs on the start and won the
race to the cushion. A quick caution on lap two found the restart
order Wilson, D. Jacobs, Kelly Kinser, Chad Kemenah, and Byron Reed.
Only four more laps were put in the books when the caution flew
again, this time for Kemenah as he went over the banking in turn
one. The order was now Wilson, D. Jacobs, Kinser, K. Jacobs, and
Reed. K. Jacobs and Reed were both able to pass Kinser before the
red flag flew for a Rodney Duncan end over end flip in turn three at
lap ten. Duncan was not hurt. The race now settled down as Wilson
continued to hold a comfortable lead on the cushion. The rest of the
top five, behind Wilson, began searching all over the race track to
find a better groove. D. Jacobs began to cut into Wilson's lead just
before the yellow flag waved again on lap 16 for Jason Dukes. K.
Jacobs found the middle of the track to his liking and passed his
brother on lap 18 and Reed followed up into third. The race was then
on as K. Jacobs and Reed started to close on the rim-riding Wilson.
D. Jacobs then began to fade and Butch Schroeder filled the top five
behind Wilson, Reed, K. Jacobs, and Kinser.
Jacobs and Reed caught Wilson in lapped traffic, on lap 25, to
make it a three-car battle for the lead. Wilson was able to hold on
through lap 30 while K. Jacobs and Reed were swapping the second
spot back and forth for four consecutive laps right behind him. Reed
finally secured second and slid in front of Wilson in turn four to
lead lap 31. K. Jacobs followed suit the next lap and Kinser would
follow next. This set up the finish fans will talk about for years.
With five laps to go, Reed and Jacobs began trading the top spot.
Jacobs would lead on the backstretch and Reed would lead on the
front stretch. At the same time, Kinser was closing in on the two
leaders. Jacobs was then able to take the lead on the front stretch
just before the final caution waved on lap 39. The two lap finish
became anti-climatic as Jacobs had a great restart to take the win
over Reed, Kinser, Wilson, Schroeder, Rob Chaney, D. Jacobs, Danny
Smith, Ed Lynch, Jr., and Mike Lutz.
Jacobs stated, "I don't think I took a breath for five laps,
the checkered flag dropped and I was out of breath because I wasn't
breathing those last few laps. I just held my own in the middle of
the track and it started to look pretty good so I just stood there
and Byron and I swapped back and forth. It was just a heck of a
race."
Reed, who won the $100 TW Metals nightly cash bonus, stated,
"It was a good race. Usually I'm on the bottom but the bottom
wasn't working for me so I went to the top and got the lead on the
top. I should have went back to my old habits and gone back to the
bottom after I got the lead."
In other action, Jason Dukes won the Coca-Cola Wheelie Shootout
worth $1,000. Mike Wagner won the Ramsey Trucking Dash for Cash
worth $500. Jeff Clapp won the Limited Late Model feature and Bryan
Scott was victorious in 305 Sprints.
