Sharon Speedway race report 2001-09-01

HARTFORD, OH - Todd Shaffer outdueled Greg Hodnett Saturday night at Sharon Speedway in the All Star sprint 30-lap 21st annual Sharon Nationals preliminary feature. Shaffer, in Gary and Patty Beam's Wolfweld with a Don Ott engine on Hoosier Tires, earned $5,000.

Shaffer led the first 13 laps before Hodnett got by following a restart. Hodnett then led until Shaffer retook the lead on lap 26 and led the rest of the way.

"The track was a little rough tonight," Shaffer said. "I think Greg caught a rut wrong and I was fortunate to get back by him." Shaffer also described Hodnett's pass of him. "I ran in on the curb and lifted a bit. I should have drove straight across it. I made a mistake and he got by me and then up here I got back by him."

Kelly Kinser started on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole with Shaffer alongside and Rob Chaney and Hodnett comprised row two. Shaffer took the initial lead over Chaney, Hodnett and Kinser in a new Eagle chassis. Shaffer pulled away from Chaney, but Chaney reeled him in as they entered lapped traffic on lap 10. By lap 12, Hodnett was alongside Chaney and took second on lap 13. Following a pair of cautions on laps 13 and 14, Hodnett dove under Shaffer for the lead.

At lap 25, Chaney began fading, allowing Kenny Jacobs to take third with PJ Chesson taking fourth. The next lap, Shaffer drove back by Hodnett and the win was his. Chesson nipped Jacobs at the finish line for third and Jacobs took over the All Star points lead by three points with his finish. Dean Jacobs was fifth with Jimmy Hawley next.

Chaney finished seventh, winning the Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven award and Lance Dewease in eighth won the $100 TW Metals nightly cash bonus.

The K-T Equipment heat went to Jimmy Hawley, the JB Enterprise Racing Products heat to Kenny Jacobs, the Crown Battery heat to Brian Ellenberger and the Engler Machine & Tool heat fell to P.J. Chesson. Jack Sodeman, Jr. won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main and the B Main went to Ed Lynch, Jr. Andy McKisson captured the Alky Dash for the six slowest qualifiers. Jason Johnson jumped the inside berm and flipped in hot laps, seriously damaging Lanny Row's 41, but he was back for heat action. Travis Rilat hopped Mike Wagner's wheel and flipped on the start of the B Main. Rilat was not injured.

In BRP big block modified tour action, heats went to Kevin Bolland, Tim Doran, Lou Blaney and Les Meyers. The 25-lap feature went to Jim Rasey after Blaney, who led 20 of the first 21 laps, broke. Rasey was followed by Kevin Bolland, Meyers, Dave Murdick, Jeff Schaeffer, Scott Gurdak, Chris Schiffer, Josh Skarzenski, Brian Fink and Kevin Hoffman.
